Quick answer

No wait after the first failure; 14 days before attempt three or later

Every standard attempt requires payment. At current US pricing, another Security+ voucher is $439 unless an eligible retake-assurance product applies.

The official waiting-period rule

First failure: CompTIA does not require a waiting period before the second attempt.

Third and later attempts: Wait at least 14 calendar days from the date of the previous attempt.

The same rule applies to CompTIA Security+. Beta exams are an exception and may be taken only once by each candidate.

What a retake costs

CompTIA does not provide a free retest or automatic retake discount. A new standard attempt currently costs $439. The current voucher with retake assurance costs $579 when purchased before the initial exam.

Retake assurance is not the same as a second standard voucher. Read its eligibility, redemption, and expiration terms before relying on it.

A practical plan after an unsuccessful attempt

  1. Save the score report and map every weak objective to the current SY0-701 outline.
  2. Do not immediately repeat the same study routine. Add targeted labs, explanations, or scenario practice.
  3. Use short topic sets first, then a timed mixed exam when weak areas improve.
  4. Reschedule only when scores are repeatable, not after one unusually strong practice result.
  5. Recheck the voucher expiration and the 14-day rule if this will be attempt three or later.

Retake decision checklist

  • Can you explain why each missed answer was wrong?
  • Have you practiced performance-based tasks rather than only definitions?
  • Are you consistently finishing within the exam time?
  • Is your identification, appointment, and testing setup already verified?
  • Would waiting a few more days reduce the risk of spending another $439?

Frequently asked questions

Can I retake the exam the next day after my first failure?

CompTIA imposes no waiting period between the first and second attempts, although additional preparation is usually more useful than an immediate repeat.

How long must I wait before a third attempt?

At least 14 calendar days from the date of the second attempt. The same minimum wait applies before each subsequent attempt.

Is a CompTIA retake free?

No. CompTIA states that candidates pay for every attempt and it does not offer free retests or retake discounts. A separately purchased retake-assurance product may cover an eligible retake.

How much is another Security+ attempt?

A new standard US voucher currently costs $439. Prices vary by region and can change.
